Department of Laser and Optoelectronics Engineering

College of Engineering Technology

Degree
Bachelor
Duration
4 years
Study mode
Morning & evening

Overview

The Department of Laser and Optoelectronics Engineering studies how light is generated, controlled and put to use: lasers of all kinds, geometrical and physical optics, photodetectors and optical sensors, optical fibres, and the electronic circuits that drive these systems.

Students begin with a firm grounding in mathematics, physics, electrical and electronic circuits and programming, then move on to laser physics, optical system design, optical communications, and signal and image processing, with applications in medicine, industry and sensing.

Courses are accompanied by regular laboratory work and summer training in relevant organisations, and the final year centres on a graduation project to design or improve an optical or electronic system.

Vision

To be a point of reference in laser and optoelectronic technology, producing engineers who keep pace with its rapid development.

Mission

To prepare technical engineers with a sound command of lasers, optics and electronics and their applications, able to operate, maintain and develop modern optical systems, through teaching that combines theory with laboratory experiment and strict safety practice.

Objectives

  • Give students a firm foundation in physics, mathematics and electronics.
  • Develop skills in designing laser and optical systems and measuring their performance.
  • Train students in fibre-optic communications and optical sensors.
  • Instil laser safety in the laboratory and the workplace.
  • Encourage applied projects and research in medical and industrial fields.

Career prospects

  • Telecommunications companies and fibre-optic networks.
  • Hospitals and medical centres using laser equipment, in its operation and maintenance.
  • Factories and workshops for laser cutting, welding and marking.
  • Optical measurement and inspection laboratories, sensing and surveillance systems.
  • Suppliers and service companies for medical and scientific instruments.
  • Postgraduate study and research.
